History of Tashkent

The history of Tashkent stretches back more than 2,000 years. Originally known as Chach, it flourished as an important trading settlement along the Silk Road connecting China, Persia and Europe. Over the centuries the city came under Arab, Turkic, Mongol and Timurid influence before becoming part of the Russian Empire in the nineteenth century. Following major reconstruction after the 1966 earthquake, Tashkent developed into one of Central Asia's most modern cities. Today it is the dynamic capital of independent Uzbekistan while preserving its rich cultural heritage through historic monuments, museums, traditional neighborhoods and bustling markets.
