About Shakhrisabz
Located south of Samarkand, Shakhrisabz is one of Uzbekistan's oldest cities and a treasure of the Silk Road. Its name means "Green City," reflecting the fertile oasis that has supported settlements for over two millennia. Today it attracts visitors with monumental Timurid architecture, broad landscaped avenues and a collection of UNESCO-recognized monuments that celebrate the legacy of one of Central Asia's greatest rulers.
History of Shakhrisabz
Known in antiquity as Kesh, Shakhrisabz was an important regional center long before the rise of the Timurid Empire. The city achieved lasting fame as the birthplace of Amir Timur (Tamerlane) in the 14th century. During his reign, magnificent palaces, religious complexes and public buildings transformed the city into a showcase of Timurid architecture. Although parts of the original city have been lost over time, surviving landmarks such as the Ak-Saray Palace ruins and the Dorut Tilovat complex earned Shakhrisabz recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
