About Nukus & the Aral Sea

Nukus, the capital of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, is the gateway to one of Uzbekistan's most unique travel regions. Visitors come to experience the world-renowned Savitsky State Museum of Arts, explore ancient desert civilizations, meet the Karakalpak people and journey to the legendary Aral Sea, where striking landscapes tell one of the world's most remarkable environmental stories.

History of Nukus & the Aral Sea

Nukus developed from a historic settlement in the lower Amu Darya region and later became the administrative capital of Karakalpakstan. Today it is celebrated for its rich cultural heritage and the internationally acclaimed Savitsky Museum. The nearby Aral Sea was once the fourth-largest inland lake on Earth and supported thriving fishing communities. During the twentieth century, large-scale river diversion dramatically reduced the sea, creating the famous Moynaq Ship Cemetery and transforming the region into an important destination for ecological tourism, photography, scientific research and cultural exploration.
