About Khiva
Khiva is one of Uzbekistan's most remarkable destinations and one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Central Asia. Enclosed within the ancient walls of Itchan Kala, the city offers an extraordinary collection of palaces, mosques, minarets, madrasas and caravanserais that transport visitors back to the height of the Silk Road. Walking through Khiva feels like stepping into a living museum where centuries of history remain beautifully preserved.
History of Khiva
According to local tradition, Khiva grew around a legendary well attributed to Shem, the son of Noah. Over many centuries the city developed into an important oasis on the Silk Road, connecting merchants traveling between Persia, Central Asia and China. As the capital of the Khorezm region and later the Khiva Khanate, it became renowned for trade, scholarship and Islamic architecture. Today, the historic inner city of Itchan Kala is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its outstanding preservation and cultural significance.
